Know your rights

Maltese law protects tenants. Here are the key ones.

Maximum deposit: 1 month

Landlords cannot charge more than 1 month’s rent as a security deposit.

Minimum lease: 1 year

All long-let leases must be at least 12 months by law.

Lease must be registered

Your landlord must register the lease with the Housing Authority within 10 days.

Early termination rights

On a 1-year lease, you can give 1 month notice after 6 months.
